#InFocus: Tune Up Philly Prepares for Performance at Phillies game

Members of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra's Tune Up Philly program have a big performance coming up. They hope the sweet sound of their instruments will bring one Philly sports team some good luck.

FOX 29 Photojournalist Bill Rohrer takes us in focus.

Paul Smith, Director of Tune up Philly says, “They didn’t believe me which is great, they thought I was one pulling over on them. The students are surprised that this is actually happening.

The group is made up of 4th to 6th grade students who are going to perform the National Anthem at a Phillies game on Wednesday, July 22nd. They wanted to rehearse in front of an audience at a park, so parkgoers at Rittenhouse Square got a sneak peak.  The director says he thought performing at a park was the best live atmosphere.

“It is interesting because the student seem not to have any fear or stress about performing”, said Smith.

The kids come from different types of backgrounds and are able to come together to create beautiful music.

“It gives them a place regardless of what grade they are, or what part of town they come from,” Smith told FOX 29.

The parents of the group are also proud of their children.

“I am very excited, it makes me emotional to see my son has so much energy that he is sticking to it”, said Rakeda Johnson, mother of Shakur Johnson.

Shakur Johnson, 12, plays the clarinet and he is very confident of his skills.

“I’m going to do my best. I ain’t trying to be embarrassed in front of all those people”, Shakur explained.

Shakur wants the Phillies to know, how hard the group has worked over the years. He hopes playing in front of the team may give them some motivation.

“I hope it makes the Phillies win because they are doing bad,” said Johnson.

The Phillies have a record among the lowest in the League; hopefully this will help the struggling team.
