APPLETON, WI - A Wisconsin teen with a deadly spinal disease choosing to die on her own terms but, not before holding a big celebration!
14-year-old Jerika Bolen has spinal muscular atrophy.
A disease the leaves her in almost constant pain and without use of the majority of her muscles.
Jerika has now chosen to take herself off the ventilator that's keeping her alive after multiple surgeries have failed to relieve her daily pain.
"I said, "Jerika, I love you so much that I will not let you suffer. If it's that bad, then it's okay. Mom will find a way to be okay,” Jen Bolen, Jerika’s mom, said.
"I decided I needed to be, like, happy and strong, or what's worth even doing a prom or anything? And I decided to change my outlook,” Bolen said.
On Friday, Jerika hosted her own prom and was even crowned prom queen!
Bolen said of her dress, "It's very poofy and very warm and it does not feel like me, but I love it so I feel awesome!"
"It makes my heart explode!” she said of the prom. “It's so crazy that people want to come for little old me, I'm nothing!"
Hospice care plans are now in place and Jerika will be taken off her ventilator at the end of August.
