COCOA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The search for a missing Cocoa Beach boy is over. Police said he was purposely staying away from home, because he thought he was in trouble. "Joy Jowers said she found Cole Monda off Cedar Avenue, around 12:30 a.m. on Friday. She was searching for the 11-year-old just like many others in the community.
"He just kind of unfolded in the bushes here. You can see," she explained. "It looked like he was hiding. As soon as I came around he came out. He didn't seem like he was shy or scared. He just came out." Joy, who brought her little girl Gracie along, used her motherly instincts to talk to the child. "I said is your name Cole and he said no at first and I said is your name Cole and he said yes. I said everything's ok, you're Mom's looking for you. The whole town's looking for you and he said something about a bike and he fell off his bike." Deputies put Cole in a car, making sure he was ok. "I said you're not in trouble, everything's ok. By all means you're not in trouble. And that's when I started waving down the people across the way here."
According to the Cocoa Beach Police Chief, there was no foul play involved. He says the child purposely avoided going home, because he knew he was in trouble. He fell asleep under a tarp, outside a home, around the corner from his own place. "He was getting home late last night. And like some kids fear, they were breaking the house rules, he was afraid to go home. He was tired, visibly upset." Joy says, "He just was holding back a lot of tears. I think it was just, I want to go home."
Several agencies and people from all over the community started searching on land and even the canals, after Cole failed to go home last night. The child was reunited with his parents at a nearby church. His father is a Cocoa Police Officer.
Joy is relieved that Cole is ok. "I'm pretty happy now, I'm overwhelmed, glad I could be a part of it." With so many people searching, Joy is stunned that she was the one to find the missing boy. "I can't believe it, here all this media and everybody and here you are. I'm like I can't believe it was that easy."
Cole was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The Chief says he's ok.
