DELAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - "Good job buddy!" Joey Maxwell said as he gave his dog, Maverick, water.
His roughly 9-year-old Golden Retriever has good days and bad.
"He's a special dog," Maxwell said with a smile.
Monday was a good day for Maverick.
Maverick lives with a type of cancer called Lymphoma. A separate nerve issue took away the use of his hind legs.
"Mavericks gone through a whole lot," Maxwell said.
Joey and his wife thought Maverick's last day on Earth was going to be two weeks ago.
"We wanted him to have one more last big night out," Maxwell explained.
So, they made sure this doggy had his day.
"He got love from so many different people that night. It was an amazing experience," Maxwell explained with a smile.
After months of chemotherapy, all you have to do is look into Maverick's eyes. Maxwell said he's showing signs of improvement. His cancer is in remission.
Maverick almost had a smile on his face Monday afternoon. The moment you start walking, his whole expression changes. His favorite thing to do is walk down the street in his cart.
Even total strangers stop on the street in DeLand to say hi to Maverick. Maxwell said "everybody loves Maverick."
"Even my mother in law who hates dogs, loves Maverick!" Maxwell said with a smile.
Shane Walker, of DeLand said "To know he's doing better is great."
Donations are pouring in to help Maverick.
"Literally just now, while we're standing here talking, $300, $500, $400. I don't even know what to say to that!" Maxwell said.
Truth is, they don't know how much time he has left.
"I know he's just a dog man, but there's really something special about this guy," He explained.
"As good as he's feeling, we're planning long-term," He explained.
Maxwell just wants his time with Maverick to be memorable and full of love...so one of Joey's best friends can just be happy.
