Detective dies from injuries after shootout in York County

YORK, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Detective Michael R. Doty, who was injured along with three other law enforcement officers during a shootout Tuesday in York County, died at the hospital, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

Doty, along with Sgt. Randy Clinton, Sgt. Buddy Brown, and Sgt. Kyle Cummings with the York Police Department, were "ambushed" by the suspect, Christian Thomas McCall, 47, while on scene, authorities said. Doty was listed in critical condition and "hanging on to life."

An impromptu memorial was held Thursday morning to remember Det. Michael Doty and to show community solidarity in support for law enforcement.

Deputies had received a call by McCall's wife for a domestic violence situation at 3042 Farrier Lane around 10:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. By the time deputies arrived, McCall had left the scene and a foot search began with the help from a K-9 unit.

The other officers underwent surgery earlier this week and are recovering.

McCall also sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to CMC-Main for treatment. He has previous ties to the Charlotte area.

"We've had a lot of calls, texts, emails, people coming by the office. We appreciate the public's support of our officers," York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson told FOX 46 Charlotte Tuesday. "We need your continued prayers. Our agencies need it right now."

A GoFundMe account has been started to support the officers' medical bills and recovery.
