PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) A student at a North Philadelphia high school died of bacterial meningitis, according to the Philadelphia School District.
A school district spokesperson says 15-year-old Jonathan Briggs, a 9th grader at George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science, passed away Tuesday after a brief illness.
The school district is in the process of figuring out who came in contact with the student. Then, they will decide if they need to see a doctor. Meningitis is spread through saliva and bloody fluids.
- Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia), and
- Altered mental status (confusion).
The symptoms of bacterial meningitis can appear quickly or over several days. Typically they develop within 3-7 days after exposure.
