Good Samaritan saves man's life on SEPTA station platform

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) A Good Samaritan is being credited with saving a man on Wednesday morning.

"He had that look in his eyes. He had tears and he was like,  'I want to kill myself. I want to kill myself. Leave me alone,'" said Calvin Harris as he recalls the words a man uttered.

He won’t forget it nor what he saw on the Broad Street line platform this morning.

"She was hysterical. She was hollering and screaming talking about save him please save him. Don’t let him kill himself," said Wilson.

SEPTA surveillance video shows a man sitting on the platform of the Broad and Race station. Police say first he texts his family and tells them he’s going to jump onto the tracks in front of a train.  Soon after you see his wife appear and then a struggle ensues. Wilson was watching from the northbound platform.

"They starting wrestling and had fell halfway down on the track and the platform. Then I said wait a minute they're not playing," he said.

Wilson, a military veteran who served several tours overseas while in the Navy, says he couldn’t stand there any longer.

"I ran over there. I had to wrestle with him and I was talking to him while I was wrestling telling him it's not worth it, whatever is going on in your life talk to me."

Watch as they struggle back and forth near the tracks until Wilson says he was able to get a good grip and pin down the man until police and paramedics got there. Then the cameras capture a touching moment between Wilson and the man’s wife.

"She really thanked me. She really gave me a nice, tight hug. I felt happy that I helped him. I feel kind of sad for him because she's got to go through a lot for him. I'm just hoping those two everything works out for them," said Wilson.

SEPTA Police also applauded several others on the platform who used the yellow emergency call boxes in the station to call for help. It allowed them to alert the train and stop it.
