15 Injured Following 4 Car Crash in Millsboro, Del.

Delaware State Police are investigating what caused a four vehicle crash that sent 15 people to the hospital late Sunday morning. The accident occurred just before noon at the intersection of US Route 113 and Dagsboro Road in Millsboro.

State Police say a 2005 Mercury Marquis was traveling northbound attempting to make a left hand turn onto Handy Road on a solid red light. As the Mercury Marquis began to cross the southbound lanes of US Rt. 113, the driver drove directly into the path of a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country, which was traveling on southbound US Rt. 113, according to police. Police say the front of the Chrysler Town and Country then struck the side of the Mercury Marquis. Police say the Mercury Marquis then struck a 2002 Suzuki X17 pick-up truck which had been stopped on eastbound Handy Road. It then struck a 2009 Nissan Maxima which was also stopped on eastbound Handy. The Mercury Marquis then overturned onto its side before coming to rest, police say.

According to police, the driver of the Mercury Marquis, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. State Police say the driver was cited by troopers with failure to stop at a red light.

Three others, who were all properly restrained at the time of the crash, were also removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Beebe Healthcare where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Seven passengers in the Chrysler Town and Country were all removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. An eight passenger was flown to the Christiana Hospital where she is currently being treated for her serious injuries.

Three passengers in the Suzuki X17 pick-up were also removed from the scene by EMS. Two were transported to Beebe Healthcare while the third was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. All were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The intersection of US Rt. 113 and Handy Road was closed for approximately 1.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The intersection has since reopened.
