Get a great view of what it's like to be a great white shark

- Call it a winter hideout for great white sharks.

Every winter, a large group gets together about halfway between Hawaii and Mexico. Researchers at California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Monterey Bay Aquarium call it the “White Shark Cafe.”

Those researchers say it takes the sharks about a month to even get to the “cafe,” where they stay for two to three months.

But why the sharks swim there is unknown.

“A cafe is somewhere where you might go to get a bite to eat, but it’s also somewhere you might go to meet someone special,” said Sal Jorgensen, senior research scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Now, to find out, the Monterey researchers are attaching special cameras to the fins of great white sharks. Besides light, those cameras measure depth, temperature and acceleration – and the scientists hope they will help solve the mystery.
