2 men injured in separate gunpoint robberies in Kingsessing

- Philadelphia police are searching for 3 men accused of shooting and robbing a man in Kingsessing.

"I knew something had happened."

Betty Askew has lived on Warrington Avenue in Kingsessing for almost 50 years. When gunfire rang out on her block Wednesday night, she knew something bad had just happened.

“I heard a pop. I thought it was kids with firecrackers. Then I heard another pop,” Askew told FOX 29 Thursday.

What Askew heard was shots being fired by three gunmen as they tried to rob a 30-year-old man while he walked to his girlfriend’s home near 54th and Warrington. As they attacked the man, he tried to run off and was gunned down right in the middle of the street.

“They fire a shot. Hits him in the back, hits his spine, temporarily paralyzed at this point. Not sure if that’s gonna be a long term condition,” Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives told Fox 29.

“That’s why I stay in the house. Especially at night time,” Askew said.

The random robbery and shooting here came just five minutes before a similar armed robbery by three suspects at 58th and Kingsessing. That 31-year-old victim was walking home to his wife when he was approached by the suspects and pistol whipped.

“They take his back pack, they take his phone, they take his wallet. One of the gentleman says ‘Just shoot him,’” Lt. Walker said.

“The times we live in is really, really sad. It really is,” Askew said.

Askew says these random armed robberies have neighbors on her block worried. Extra patrols have been added to the area and police are pulling together intelligence information and video trying to track down the suspects.

“It’s sad. It’s really sad that you’re not safe walking. I don’t care what time of night it is. Still not safe,” Askew said.

“They’re acting like they’re gonna shoot first and rob second. We just gotta get these people off the street,” Lt Walker said.

The shooting victim at 54th and Warrington was robbed as he lay shot on the ground. The suspects went through his pockets. They are described as 18 to 25 years old. All three were armed with guns.
