SOUTH STREET (WTXF/AP) - Philadelphia police officers came under fire for a second night in a row but this time, no one was wounded.
Just before midnight, a group of people walked by patrol officers around 9th and South streets. One detected a strong odor of marijuana. He called out to the group and two men ran away.
The officer chased one east on South and northbound on Darien Street, with his partner following.
That man ran into a driveway in the 500 block of Darien. The first officer approached but the wanted man shot at least three rounds in his direction.
The officer did not return fire. Instead, he took cover, and wasn’t hit nor injured.
Then, the officer radioed the man’s description and other officers found him in back of a property and took him into custody without incident. His weapon was recovered.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment for a severe sprain to his right ankle from jumping over fences.
The 19-year-old’s name has not been released.
The other suspect was also arrested.
That shooting came almost exactly 24 hours after a police sergeant was shot and wounded in her car in West Philadelphia, and a University of Pennsylvania police officer and four other people were shot and wounded before the gunman was killed. A 25-year-old woman among those shot later died.
