Endangered Sumatran Tiger Born at National Zoo

- An endangered Sumatran tiger cub was born at the National Zoo on Tuesday, July 11. The zoo released video on Wednesday of mother Damai and the cub taken within two hours of the birth.

Keepers watched the birth via closed-circuit camera and are monitoring the cub, which appears to be nursing, moving and behaving normally, the zoo said. They’re also allowing mom and cub time to bond, which means it may be some time before veterinarians can determine the cub’s sex.

It is Damai’s second litter, but it’s father Sparky’s first.

It will be several months before zoo visitors can see the cub in the zoo’s exhibit. The cub will have to undergo a series of health exams and vaccinations before successfully passing a swimming test.
