Gunman reportedly fired randomly in store, killing 3 before himself

- A gunman killed three other people after hours at a northeast Pennsylvania supermarket and then himself, state police said Thursday.

Troopers responded to a report of someone shooting people inside Weis Market in Eaton Township, northwest of Scranton, just before 1 a.m. Thursday. Troopers found the bodies of three males and one female inside, and said another person who witnessed at least part of the episode survived unharmed, according to a statement from state police.

Authorities believe one of the males fired all the shots.

The store is normally open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Police did not immediately explain how the gunman got into the store or why he sought out the victims.

WKOK-AM reported that the gunman fired randomly in the store in addition to targeting the victims, and that the witness who escaped unharmed was the person who called Wyoming County 911 dispatchers.

The store's phone was not operating Thursday morning, and a call to Weis Markets headquarters in Sunbury was not immediately returned.

The district attorney and coroner could not immediately be reached for comment. State police expected to release more information once the victims' families were notified. Their names were not immediately released and police didn't say whether the gunman was an employee or how he otherwise knew the victims.

"We believe this is a contained incident and the public is not in any danger at this time," police said in the release.
