Police: Mother charged in shooting death of 4-year-old

Authorities say a 4-year-old girl's mother has been charged in connection with her death.

According to authorities, the girl's mother, Shakeia Holmes, 25, has been charged with third-degree murder. An arrest warrant has been issued for Holmes' boyfriend, police say.

The girl has been identified as 4-year-old Sani. According to police, there was a domestic incident between Sani's mother and her boyfriend. Sources say there was a gun in the rowhome, someone fired it, and the 4-year-old was shot in the face Thursday. She died at the hospital.

Teddy bears and candles line the front step of the home she shared with her mother and 3-year-old sister on the 1800 block of North 20th Street. A vigil was held on Friday night.

"Clipped your wings so early baby but guess what? God got your back, God got your back," said a neighbor standing before family and others who gathered well into the evening as they struggled to cope with what happened.

"That should never happen to no child like that," said Janice Code, another neighbor.

Code says when she came out to see what happened, the little girl's mother had the child outside while waiting for emergency crews.

"When I came out my door she was laying right on that step. I didn't know if she fell out the window. I didn't know what happened but later on they said she had got shot," said Code.

Police are continuing their investigation tonight.
