(INISDE EDITION)- An Upstate New York college baseball player was discovered dead outdoors on Sunday after he was last seen leaving a party in dangerously cold weather.
The body of Alex Hendry, 19, was found near the baseball and softball fields at Onondaga Community College around 1 a.m.
Hendry had last been seen leaving a party on foot, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. Temperatures ranged from -16 to -23 degrees in the early morning hours Sunday.
Hendry's roommate reported him missing after he failed to return home and an extensive search was conducted by the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department and OCC's Campus Safety, according to an OCC statement.
"The thoughts and prayers of our entire campus community are with Hendry's family and friends. Counselors will be available for students to speak with," the statement read.
Authorities have not revealed Hendry's cause of death or publicly ruled out foul play and have asked anyone who may have information on the case to contact Onondaga County investigators.
Just a few miles from where Hendry was found dead Sunday, a Syracuse University student was found dead inside a campus residence hall just a day and a half earlier.
The death of that student was not being investigated as a criminal matter, Syracuse.com reports.
Hendry's death remained under investigation as of Monday afternoon.
According to the Onondaga Lazers website, Hendry participated in two years of varsity baseball while a student at Hilton High outside Rochester.
Hendry's high school athletic director, Mike Giruzzi, told the Democrat and Chronicle that Hendry was a valued member of the school's baseball team.
"He was always having fun with his teammates and always had a playful grin that made him very easy to get along with. He had many friends and was well-liked by all," Giruzzi said.
Current member of the Hilton High baseball team, Chase Metzger, tweeted his own message of mourning on Monday.
"Still can't comprehend it," he wrote. "My teammates and I will be playing for Alex this year #cadetsbaseball #playforahenz."
Administrators from the school released a statement on the loss, as well. It read in part:
"The school is mourning the tragic loss of one of our recent graduates. Alex Hendry was a member of our varsity baseball team, had many friends and was liked by all. He will be greatly missed."
