UPDATE: Another Antioch teacher's aide arrested in child abuse case

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KTVU/BCN) - A video is making the rounds on the Internet that shows a student from a special-needs school in Antioch being held and slapped. Now a second teacher's aide faces charges in the child abuse case.

The first teacher's aide charged in this case is Kamaljot Kaur, a 26-year-old Antioch resident. Kaur is charged with misdemeanor child abuse, while a second teacher's aide, 22-year-old Chad Corbin was charged with failing to report an incident of child abuse as a mandatory reporter, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Bruce Flynn.

The video shows what appears to be a staff member attacking a student while two students watch. Tobinworld is a non-profit school for special-needs children and young adults with behavioral problems.

The video continues to show the student being attacked, grabbed and forced to the ground and held by their head.

The incident happened late Tuesday afternoon. The school, Tobinworld 2, says it has suspended the two staff members. The California Department of Education is now launching a formal investigation into the incident.

According to a press release, arriving Antioch police officers contacted and interviewed school staff members, other student witnesses, and the victim, a 9-year-old boy and resident of Oakland. The victim did not have any visible injuries or complaints of pain, according to police.

"What they did, that's thugs. That's something that happens out on the streets when you get jumped. So those aides… not only do they need to be terminated, they need to go to jail," said Tim Sickler, a Tobinworld parent.

"I was very upset, disheartened," said Damon Amey, a parent at the school. "I was disturbed."

"What I saw is heartbreaking. My son has the same issue," said Lina Azizi, also a parent with a student enrolled at Tobinworld.

It's also not the first time the school has been in trouble with the state.

In this latest case, the school says they were notified of the incident around 4:30 p.m. . Tuesday. They immediately suspended the staff involved and called Antioch police, but some parents said they weren't made aware of the issue and found out through social media.

"There was no parent notification. They knew about it last night. There was nothing from the police department. I found out about it on Facebook," Sickler said.

According to the California Department of Education, in August of last year, the school had its certification suspended by the state for hiring staff that didn't complete required background checks and weren't properly certified.

The department also said the school also changed staff without first notifying them. Two weeks ago the school was re-certified, but now parents say a change needs to happen so the school can remain open.

Sicker called for the immediate resignation of the school's principal.

The child attacked in the video did report to school on Wednesday and appeared uninjured according to the school.
