St. Louis (WTXF) A new mom from St. Louis took a photo of her daughter surrounded by syringes. The photo was shared by the Sher Institutes, a fertility clinic network, and quickly went viral.
In the photo, the little girl is sleeping soundly on a white sheet while lying in a heart-shaped display of hundreds of syringes with empty vials to show just how far some mothers are willing to go to have a child.
Many women are so determine to become a mother that they undergo in vitro fertilization after not being able to conceive. IVF can be an exhausting, painful, and long path to go through, including multiple injections a day, which can lead to an abundance amount of syringes used over the cycle. That’s why this mother posted the photo to Facebook. It “shows the love that went into making this gorgeous new baby girl,” the mother, Angela said in the caption of the picture.
Angela had to make many sacrifices to have her baby, like other women participating in IVF, including hormone injections possibly up to three times a day in the thigh or stomach, to produce eggs during a menstrual cycle. Women may also inject themselves with another drug that stops ovulation from starting before the eggs are ready to be retrieved.
Once the eggs are ready, injections to start ovulation are necessary, which pushes the eggs from the ovaries. While the woman is waiting for retrieval, many blood tests are taken, and the eggs are finally removed using a long needle. Then, the eggs are transferred through a catheter after they are fertilized.
There are a lot of people who have never been through the IVF experience, so they may have been surprised to see the process be illustrated the way it was. Facebook users commented and shared their stories and support immediately.
Sher Institutes, has already had thousands of views on this image that was shared on October 5th on their Facebook page. Some started sharing photos of children that were also conceived using in vitro fertilization, while others commented on how emotional the photo was.
