Beloved grandfather killed protecting son from armed suspect

Ann Spencer is mourning the death of her husband after he was shot in the chest early Wednesday morning.

Sean Spencer, 50, was shot just before 3 a.m. after he and his wife Ann woke up to noise outside their Wilmington home on the 800 block of West 5th Street

Ann says their 21-year-old son, named after his father Sean, was leaving for his job at UPS when her husband looked out the window and saw a commotion outside involving their son. They ran outside to help when a gun was fired and struck her husband in the chest. He died at the bottom of their stairs.

"He was laying on the floor, blood everywhere... He was protecting our son," Ann recounted the scene.

Police say the son got away unharmed and the unknown gunman fled the scene

Ann said someone came out of nowhere and put a gun to her son's head as he was getting into his car. As this happened, her husband came outside and took the bullet for his son.

Ann is shocked and heartbroken saying she does not know who would do something like this. She explained that her son is a good person working for UPS and going to college at Delaware Tech.

"I don't know why. I don't know why. He torn a good family," Ann said between sobs.

Ann explained how her husband was a family man with three children and four grandchildren.

"They are all gonna miss their Pop Pop," Ann said.

Police are still trying to uncover all the details and have released few specifics about the murder. They urge anyone who may have information to contact police immediately.
