Christie to serve out term, renovate State House

- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie insists he will end his term as governor in early 2018 as scheduled, however he will "consider any requests that are made" by President-elect Donald Trump.

Also, to those who don't like him, he said "Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not going to" leave or resign.

He added that after announcing work will begin immediately on a complete renovation of the "shameful" State House in Trenton.

The Republican governor said staff will be moved into other office space by July for a four-year, $300 million project.
He said the current condition of the statehouse is "shameful" and noted the statehouse hasn't had a major upgrade since 1958. Parts of the building date to the 18th century.

He says the part of the building used by the executive branch doesn't have fire sprinklers and there are a number of code violations.

Christie says workers and tourists shouldn't have to worry about safety in the building.

He says the portion of the building used by the Legislature won't be affected.

New Jersey's is the nation’s second–oldest continuously operating State House. It was built in 1792. Christie said there have been 17 building projects, but the executive portion has not been touched in 60 years.

He said he got the idea after visiting Annapolis to watch his son’s Princeton baseball team play the Naval Academy and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan gave him a tour of the nation’s oldest State House, which is in much better condition.

There has been speculation Christie could be tapped for a post in President-elect Donald Trump's administration. But he was replaced as chief of Trump's White House transition team and the governor has recently said he intends to finish his final year in office while leaving the door open to a Trump offer.
