Coast Guard suspends search for swimmer who disappeared Sunday

- The Coast Guard announced that they were suspending the search for the night for a swimmer who went missing of a beach in Point Pleasant, NJ.

The swimmer disappeared early Sunday, and both she and her friend were visiting from Slovakia.

Its 5th District PA Detachment Atlantic City reported, “Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay were notified by the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department at about 2:27 a.m. of a 24-year-old white female with brown hair who reportedly went missing while swimming with a friend.”

The missing woman is identified as identified as Zuzana Oravcova. The friend is Thomas Kadlec, 23. Authorities say he immediately notified an employee of the boardwalk who reported the incident to the police department.

The Coast Guard launched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Station Manasquan Inlet, and an MH-65 Dolphin aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City, to search for the missing swimmer.

According to the Coast Guard, “Both parties were in distress, due to the high surf conditions. Kadlec was able to swim ashore. Oravcova did not.”

The National Weather Service had issued a warning about dangerous rip currents along the Jersey Shore this weekend. The advisory had spurred many towns to ban swimming at their beaches.

The search continued into daylight and is still going on. Boats, a helicopter and ground crews are involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sector Delaware Bay at 215-271-4940.
