Deadly crash closes Route 1, Unionville-Chadds Ford schools

Icy and snowy road conditions are being blamed on a Wednesday morning crash on Route 1 in Delaware County that turned deadly, and the road closure has some area schools closed.

SKYFOX was over the scene on Route 1 -- also known as Baltimore Pike -- and Creek Road in Chadds Ford.

Pennsylvania State Police report a man heading southbound on Route 1 just before 5am lost control while driving over ice and snow. Then, he crossed over into the northbound lanes and hit a car going the opposite way.

The man in that second car -- Jeffrey Phillippe of Kennett Square -- "sustained severe injuries in the collision" and died.

The first man was also injured, but there's no word on his condition or whether he'll be charged.

Route 1 remains shut down in both directions for a detailed crash investigation.

Police, fire officials and PennDOT personnel are all there, helping control the traffic problem. The crash has Unionville-Chadds Ford Schools closed. Superintendent Dr. John Sanville wrote with the Route 1 closing, plus the 926 bridge out, "Our community is effectively cut in half. Under these circumstances bus runs could take hours. We feel it prudent to close schools today. Our offices will open on a 2-hour delay schedule."

Expect heavy traffic delays if you have to be in the area, and take your time, wherever you're heading.
