Department of Economic Security to publicly shame deadbeat parents

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Many people don't know, but there are over 100,000 parents in the State of Arizona that owe millions in unpaid child support.

Governor Doug Ducey hopes a social media push will help find these deadbeat parents.

In total, there are over 142,000 parents that owe $1.74 billion in unpaid child support.

During the State of the State, Monday Governor Ducey announced they will begin posting pictures of parents who don't pay child support on social media. It will have their information along with #deadbeat. This so-called public shaming will have the worst of the worst according to Ducey.

"You can look at it that way, sure you can. I think it's actually looking at the power of the media and the responsibility that we have to protect citizens and if someone doesn't want that all they have to do is pay up," said Ducey.

According to Ducey 387 and 34 moms owe more than $20 million to Arizona women and children, and some have warrants out for their arrest. They make up less than 1% of the total 142,000 who owe.

Governor Ducey is asking for the public's help in finding these deadbeats. If you would like to help check out the Arizona DES Twitter account at https://twitter.com/ArizonaDES
