Hatboro, Pa. (WTXF) - A disabled woman claims she was discriminated against after she says she was denied two Uber rides. Uber has a different account of what happened.
“After I finished crying, being hysterical and embarrassed I was mortified," said Lillian Pike. She’s still upset about what she calls discrimination she says she suffered during two experiences with Uber drivers.
“I started crying. I was angry,” she said. Lillian uses a wheelchair and says she has terminal lupus. She doesn’t want to show her face on camera. It all started a week and a half ago when her husband Andrew asked to take her out for a special night.
"My husband was like come on Lil let’s get your nails done and your eyebrows done. I know it makes you feel pretty,” she recalled. Uber picked them up from their Hatboro apartment and dropped them off at the nail salon with no problem. Then, Andrew decided they should go to dinner and called Uber again.
A driver in a Toyota Highlander pulled up.
“He was like no, no, no wheelchair," said Lillian. The couple called another car ride company and went on with their night. Then, the next day they scheduled an Uber driver with a wheelchair accessible van to pick them up to go to a friend’s funeral.
“The gentleman literally text us and said do you really need a wheelchair? You’re too far and canceled the ride,” said Lillian.
FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson called Uber about the couple’s claims of discrimination. A spokesperson told FOX 29 that the first trip was canceled due to a capacity issue and the second trip was canceled because of the length of the trip to pick up the couple. Lillian’s husband disagrees.
“It’s a Toyota Highlander. They’re big SUV’s,” said Andrew. He says Uber promised an investigation but he never heard back.
“I’m not looking for anything free just public acknowledgement that you know what we’re sorry we did wrong and we as drivers will not do that in the future,” said Andrew. Lillian doesn't want this to happen to anyone else.
“They shouldn’t be afraid is this guy going to leave me or is this driver going to leave me because I’m in a wheelchair,” she said. Uber also sent us a statement which reads in part: Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination and we have been in contact with this rider to offer our support. Uber has a clear non-discrimination policy."
