Feds to hear transgender, other students' rights case

- Monday morning, a federal district court is expected to hear the case of a Berks County school's practice of supporting transgender students.

The case challenges the Boyertown Area School District from recognizing and respecting its students' gender identities.

In March, a student filed the suit after a transgender student, who identifies as a boy, was allowed to use the boys' locker room and bathroom.

The Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative group, is representing him and three other Boyertown Area School District students. They argue their right to not undress in front of someone of the opposite sex is being violated.

The suit says a plaintiff, identified as Joel Doe, was changing into gym clothes in the boys' locker room when he saw a student, wearing shorts and a bra, who had recently begun transitioning from female to male.

The hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Easton.
