Fire department to climb Stone Mountain on September 11

Firefighters from the City of Fayetteville Fire Department have challenged themselves to a one-mile climb--equivalent to 160 flights of stairs--to the summit of Stone Mountain to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Wearing a full compliment of firefighting gear, the group will test their own endurance in honor of the sacrifices made by 343 firefighters and paramedics who lost their lives on 9/11.

A group of four firefighters from the same department made the climb to the top of Stone Mountain last year, carrying with them the American flag flown at their station in Fayetteville.

This year's climb is expected to take the firefighters two hours.
