Residents Displaced, Two Firefighters Injured in Center City Fire

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF)- A huge apartment fire in Center City took firefighters over two hours to get under control, and left two firefighters injured and several people without a home this morning.

The fire broke out shortly after 5:30 p.m. and was placed under control around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, after it had reached four alarms.

Fire commissioner Derrick Sawyer said crews found and extinguished a fire in the basement but also found flames and heavy smoke on the fourth floor.

One firefighter was transported to Hahnemann Hospital for cardiac issues, while another was taken to Jefferson Hospital. Both were place in stable condition.

Officials say the cause of the blaze was not immediately clear.

The American Red Cross is currently providing emergency assistance (food, clothing and lodging) to 5 people affect by the fire.
