Flooding destroys camp supplies for kids touched by HIV/AIDS

A free Chester County camp for kids touched by HIV and AIDS almost didn't happen this year after flooding destroyed thousands of dollars worth of supplies on the eve of camp.

The emotional wish log ceremony at camp Dreamcatcher is always a tearjerker, but this summer the camp fire had extra special meaning. After 22 years serving children whose families are touched by HIV and AIDS there almost wasn't a camp this year.

"It was a horrible thing to have happen. I saw it Wednesday night and couldn't even deal with it," Executive Director of Camp Dreamcatcher Patty Hillkirk said. "$9,000 worth of stuff was gone."

Officials found the destroyed supplies in their Kennett Square storage garage last week. Just hours, before they opened at Camp Saginaw in Oxford.

Karim Ferguson, from Southwest Philly, is a leader in training. He knows how important it is keeping the camp running for kids who need it most.

"98% is low income, so you have to think these kids may not come without backpacks. They might be low on socks, underwear, towels. .All that stuff was lost," Ferguson said.

Camp volunteers are still scrambling to replace everything that was lost.

"We didn't obviously let them know this was happening. We just had to keep moving on and moving forward. That's what we do,"Hillkirk said.
