Gas main fire closes several roads in Egg Harbor Township

Egg Harbor Township, NJ (WTXF) A gas main fire shut down several roads in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

South Jersey Gas says a live power line fell onto a guardrail on Ocean Heights Avenue, which is one of the main arteries through town. A spokesperson says an electric current from that line zapped through the metal guardrail and ignited an 8-inch gas main.

No one was injured. Road closures meant detours and some delays. Officials in the area tell us the high pressure main was older and crews struggled to install a new valve to starve the flames. Hot weather added to the difficulties.
