Girl, 5, dies following NE Philadelphia fire

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF)- A five-year-old girl has died after she was injured in a fire in her Northeast Philadelphia home earlier this week.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon after 5:00 p.m. on the 3700 block of Hereford Lane.

Both the girl and her mother were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition following the blaze.

Fire officials say the girl was trapped on the second floor of the home, and neighbors reported seeing the mother making multiple attempts to re-enter the home to rescue her daughter.

Firefighters arrived a short time later and managed to get the little girl out of the home, but neighbors say she emerged unconscious.

"Fire rescue got her out a few minutes later and she was just lifeless when they brought her out," said explained neighbor Lauren DiJoseph earlier this week.

Following the fire, firefighters were going door-to-door in the neighborhood making sure residents had working smoke detectors. It was unclear if the home the child and her mother were in had them.

Neither the mother nor daughter have been identified.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
