Girl hit by car while crossing street to school bus

A 14-year-old girl crossing the street to board her school bus down the shore is recovering across the state in Camden after she was hit by a car.

New Jersey State Police say based on the preliminary investigation, the school bus was stopped on Route 9 northbound at W. Ocean Avenue at 7:17am. Its stop sign was extended and flashing red lights activated, so students could safely cross the road to board the bus.

That's when they say a 17-year-old boy driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla southbound didn't "stop in time and struck the victim, who was legally crossing the road."

She was seriously injured and first taken to Atlantic Care Regional Trauma Center, but then to Cooper Medical Trauma Center for further treatment.

The driver and his 15-year-old female passenger were not injured.

The investigation is continuing, and no summonses or criminal charges have been issued at this time.
