Gloucester Township officer escapes brutal crash with minor injuries

A Gloucester Township police officer is lucky to be alive after his cruiser was struck by a driver on the Atlantic City Expressway.

Police were dispatched to an accident near the mile 41 marker shortly after midnight on Thursday. A Gloucester Township officer arrived at the scene of the accident to assist with traffic control, police say.

The officer was reportedly sitting idle in his cruiser with the lights on when a car struck the police vehicle from behind.

The officer was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Cherry Hill where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police say the officer was fasten in at the time of the crash and the cruiser was positioned in a way that prevented the officer from being seriously injured.

The driver of the striking car was not injured, but was detained by police for suspicion of impaired driving.

This is an ongoing investigation.
