Gun sales set record for 17th consecutive month

(FOX NEWS)- Gun sales hit the 17th consecutive monthly record in September, and overall sales are up 27 percent compared to the same period last year, according to figures from the FBI.

A total of 1,992,219 background checks were processed through the bureau's National Instant Criminal Background Check System for the month of September, nearly 200,000 more than the 1,795,102 conducted in September 2015.

The FBI's accounting of how many NICS checks were processed in a month is considered one of the most accurate metrics for judging gun sales, since virtually all sales made through licensed gun dealers must include a NICS check.
