Labor Day weekend marks the end of the summer shore season

The sights and sounds of summer are winding down.

"And now winter. Ahhh, I don't want to think about that," said Betsy Brown, of Shrivers.

The summer of 2018 hasn't exactly knocked many Boardwalk businesses off their feet. In fact, it was for the birds, says the owner of Litterers Food Court.

"It's been the worst I've seen in 30 years," the owner said.

Blame it on the streaky weather, starting with last winter, when shops were hoping to ride a wave of nice pre-season weekends.

"They got nothing this year. The weather never cooperated. So, they always pick up a little money and that didn't happen," said Steve McDonnell, a restaurant supplier.

And, when the season actually started, it was cold at first, rainy in the middle and too hot at the end.

So, yes, some shops struggled. While other Jersey shore staples like Shrivers kept the salt water taffy flowing just fine.

It was a good year for shops like On the Sea. Turns out, how shops did depended on what shops sold.

But, days before school starts, 6-year-old Grace got exactly what she wanted.

"It was a little bit windy and a little bit rainy after I got out of the water park, but it was fun," said Grace.
