Lawncrest residents suspicious of utility worker scam

A man posing as a utility worker may be targeting unsuspecting homeowners. A family got him on camera this weekend. The man claimed to be with PECO and needed to get inside the home of a Lawncrest mother.

"I believe he was trying to get in my home and to harm me and my family," she told FOX 29.

The woman who didn't want to be identified did want her story told. A man tried to talk his way into her home Saturday night about 5 p.m.

It was a Wif-Fi enabled video doorbell that captured the man at her front doorstep. You can hear her telling the man she wasn't expecting anyone.

"I never stated you were expecting someone. I'm here for the update the provider which was added to your bill at some point," he said in the video.

PECO tells the homeowners they never sent anyone and this rattled mom says it's the second time in a couple days the camera has caught the same man approaching her home. Finally, the woman's husband tells the guy to beat it.

Second District police tell us the man technically did nothing illegal, but they are too convinced he was an imposter.

The family says they got the video doorbell because stolen packages from their porch. Never knowing who else may be showing up at their door. She thinks this technology may have been a lifesaver.

"It turns out it served a completely different purpose and it could have saved our lives," she said.
