Lawsuit Filed Over Traffic Death Involving Ride-The-Duck Boat

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The family of a woman struck and killed by an amphibious tourist boat on a downtown Philadelphia street last spring has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company and the city.

Attorneys for the family of 68-year-old Elizabeth Karnicki of Beaumont, Texas allege that the May 8 accident was due in part to "huge blind spots" on the Ride The Ducks vehicle. Lawyer Robert Mongeluzzi said Tuesday that the vehicles should be banned from Philadelphia streets.

Ride The Ducks said their "thoughts and prayers" remain with the family and "safety is of paramount importance" to the company. But the firm cited reports of witnesses interviewed by police who said the victim crossed against the light and appeared to be looking at an electronic device. A city spokesman declined comment.
