Lesbian Teacher Dismissed from Local Catholic School

It was a large turnout for a meeting in Philadelphia Wednesday night. More than 130 parents and community members gathered in Fairmount to show support for a popular local teacher who they say was let go for all the wrong reasons.

Officials at Waldron Mercy Academy in Merion recently informed parents about the dismissal of a popular teacher.

Margie Winters' Facebook page says formally of Waldron Mercy Academy that's because the religion teacher was fired from the prestigious private Catholic school. In an email from the principal, it mentions lifestyle choices that contradict current church teachings.

Many parents are shocked the popular teacher may have been fired because she's a lesbian.

"Anger, sad one good friend cried wrote a letter to Margie felt really sad," parent Nancy Hughes told FOX 29.

State Senator Daylong Leach says while there is no state law to protect LGBT people. However, he says Lower Merion, where the school is located, does have one.

Winters was hired in 2007. She and her wife got married the same year in Boston.
