Vigil held For Pennsauken teen killed in hit-and-run

PENNSAUKEN, NJ (WTXF) - A vigil was held on Tuesday night for a New Jersey teen who was killed in a hit-and-run.

"It feels good to know that everybody was impacted by Quasan. He was a great person. It's not even a word to describe how amazing he was," said a friend.

Family and friends of 16-year-old Quasan Turner turned out in large numbers for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night at McGraw Park in Camden.  The Pennsauken teen was killed in a hit-and-run Monday night.

"I should be the one on the ground screaming why did this happen. That was me earlier but I can’t see myself doing it now. That's my brother and he wouldn’t want that. He's in heaven next to God," said Stewart Turner. He’s the victim’s brother. He shared heartfelt words during the vigil to console others also grieving the loss. Stewart urged the crowd not to hate the woman who allegedly took his brother’s life.

"She did what she did by leaving the scene and maybe if she would have been there then maybe he could still be here. Maybe something better could have happened but we're not a family of hate," he said.

It was 11:30 Monday night when Quasan was hit trying to cross Route 130.  Police later found the alleged driver identified as 40-year-old Susan Hyland after they say her 19-year-old niece, a passenger in the car, called 911 after her aunt allegedly fled to a home near 29th and Clinton in Camden. Quasan’s family says they’re thankful for her actions.

"Considering that was her family, she did the right thing, even though that was her family," said Stewart.

As the crowd held balloons and made posters in Quasan’s memory, those who love him vowed never to forget him.

"Everything I do from here on out is going to be dedicated to him from here on out until I die and I see him again," said friend.

Police say the suspect tried to escape out the back door when they arrived at the home. They say she was also driving on a suspended license when she allegedly hit the teen.
