92-year-old man dies in Toms River fire, councilman involved in rescue

A man is dead following a fire at a Holiday City residence in Toms River, New Jersey.

The incident occurred at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

According to a press release, fire officials received a report of a smoke condition at a home on Dashan Lane.

EMTs arrived along with Police Officer James Skripko.

They saw smoke inside of the home and neighbors told officials that an elderly man lived there alone.

EMT John Carolan entered the home through a bathroom window and saw a 92-year-old male on the kitchen floor near the smoldering stove.

Carolan unlocked the front door to let Skripko and Councilman and EMT Kevin Geoghegan, who was appointed to Toms River Municpal Council three weeks ago, in.

The three along with Silverton Fire Chief Gary Tatersall dragged the man from the smoky home and to the front sidewalk where they started CPR.

Other fire officials entered the home and determined that it was not an active fire, but instead a heavy smoke condition.

The man was taken to Community Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is not available at this time.
