Biker killed in "violent" hit-and-run crash in Mayfair

Police are investigating a hit-and-run that left a cyclist dead in Mayfair early Friday morning.

The incident occurred on the 5700 block of Frankford Avenue shortly before 12:45 a.m.

According to officials, a champagne or silver-colored vehicle struck a man riding a bike.

The crash was described as very violent and the bike was split in two. It was found 75-100 feet from where authorities believe the impact took place. The man's body was thrown 50-75 feet.

Police say 42-year-old Matthew Matteson died at the scene. He lived a half-mile from the crash scene.

His bike had at least 3 safety devices and he was riding on a marked bike lane.

Police say the driver of the Buick Century turned himself in to two SEPTA officers later Friday morning and told them the car was parked on Van Kirk, which is a dead end street not far from the accident scene.

Police searched for surveillance video that may have captured the car before or after the hit-and-run. They would not say if there was any evidence the driver was intoxicated. No charges have been filed at this point.
