Del. police use lethal force against 2 dogs running wild

NEWARK, Del. (AP) -- Police in Delaware say they were forced to use lethal force against two dogs running wild and acting in a threatening manner.

Newark police officers responded Friday to at least two reports of dogs running loose near a state social services center.

Authorities say the dogs, a pit bull and a German Shepherd, ran toward the officers, baring their teeth, growling and foaming at the mouth.

The dogs then began to chase passers-by.

Authorities say three animal-control officers and more than a dozen police officers spent almost 90 minutes trying unsuccessfully to capture the dogs.

Police wound up striking both dogs with their vehicles. The German Shepherd ran away after being struck and was not captured. The pit bull also ran away but was later shot and killed by police.
