Ex-NJ corrections officer gets 16 years for sexually abusing inmates

CLINTON, N.J. (AP) - A former corrections officer convicted of sexually abusing two inmates at New Jersey's only women's prison and engaging in a pattern of misconduct is now headed to prison.

Jason Mays received a 16-year sentence Thursday. The 46-year-old Hillside man also must register as a sex offender.

Mays was a senior officer at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton. He was among seven employees there who were accused of sexually assaulting inmates at the prison over the last two years as part of an ongoing criminal probe by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office.

Three of the other workers pleaded guilty to official misconduct, while trials are pending for the remaining three.

Mays was accused of abusing five inmates overall, but was acquitted on charges related to three of them.
