Man arrested for attempted carjacking, assault in New Castle

- Police have arrested a man they say is responsible for an attempted carjacking and assault in New Castle.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dollar General on New Castle Avenue.

The victim, an 80-year-old woman, parked her car and entered the store. Upon leaving the store, she was confronted by an unknown white man, who asked for a ride. When the woman declined, the suspect allegedly assaulted her with a box cutter.

Police say several patrons responded to her aid as the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Shawn Hollowood of Buffalo, fled the scene.

The victim was treated by EMS at the scene for a non-life threatening injury to her wrist.

Around 12:30 p.m., police received a call that a man with self-inflicted injuries was in the area of East Avenue in New Castle. Detectives later confirmed the man as the suspect involved in the carjacking and assault at Dollar General.

Hollowood was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. After his release, Hollowood was charged with attempted carjacking, second degree assault and related offenses. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in default of $45,000 secured bond.
