Man charged with 7th DUI after multi-vehicle crash in Wilmington

A Wilmington man has been charged with his 7 th DUI and vehicular assault following an accident late Friday night.

The incident occurred on Friday at 11:10 p.m. at the intersection of Boxwood Road and Overland Avenue in Wilmington, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene and found 46-year-old Richard Chamberlin suffering from injuries to the face and head and a strong smell of an alcoholic beverage.

A preliminary investigation discovered that an 18-year-old female was driving a green Nissan Maxima south on Boxwood Road waiting to make a left turn onto Overland Avenue when Chamberlin struck her vehicle from behind.

Police say this caused the Maxima to enter the northbound lanes of Boxwood Road where it was struck head-on by a white Lexus.

Chamberlin's vehicle continued on Boxwood Road where it stopped after striking a light pole.

Chamberlin and the driver and occupant of the Lexus were taken to Christiana Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Chamberlin remains hospitalized.

He has been charged with 7 th offense driving under the influence, vehicular assault in the second degree, reckless driving, driving while suspended or revoked and driving at an unsafe speed.
