Man charged with hit-and-run receives additional charges after further investigation

LANCASTER, Pa. (WTXF) - A Lancaster man charged with a hit-and-run in May has been issued additional charges after further investigation.

Back on May 17, 46-year-old James P. Irvin III caused a multi-vehicle car crash on Lincoln Highway East that involved a school bus, leaving multiple students injured.

Witnesses shared that Irvin was in a right turning lane but instead went "flying" straight through the intersection, passing multiple vehicles. He drove across lanes into the westbound lane, and then rushed back toward the east lane where he collided with an escort vehicle.

As a result of the crash, a Lancaster Mennonite School bus tipped over and 14 students were injured. Two of the students were seriously injured, with one wedged underneath the bus. Following the incident, Irvin quickly drove away.

Initially, Irvin had been charged with various counts of hit-and-run. On Monday, additional charges were filed by East Lampeter Township police.

"Through further investigation and a full reconstruction of what took place, we discovered the driver's behavior was even more egregious than our initial findings showed," said Craig Stedman, Lancaster County District Attorney. "That explains the new charges, which we believe are entirely appropriate going forward."

Irvin's newest charges are 14 counts of simple assault, three summary citations, three counts of aggravated assault, 20 counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of aggravated assault by vehicle.
