Tuesday classes canceled at Methacton School District

EAGLEVILLE, Pa. (AP/WTXF) -- The Methacton School District has canceled classes for Tuesday after contract negotiations with teachers broke down and the union decided to strike.

Teachers in the Montgomery County school district walked off the job Monday after failing to reach an agreement with the district Sunday night.

Union representatives say the school board wants teachers to pay a greater share of health care premiums. They said they could not accept the proposal without a corresponding increase in salaries.

Parents are frustrated by the timing of the possible strike, but teachers argue their salaries are well below the county average, and it's now or never in terms of striking a deal.

The district also announced a number of contingency plans for the work stoppage, which can be found on the district website: www.methacton.org
