Nine Rowan students charged in debit card scam

Nine students at Rowan University have been charged in a scheme that police say involved manipulation of the University's Rowan Card (Boro Bucks) debit card system, the Glassboro Police Department said.

Boro Bucks is a university-administered card system that allows users to pay for goods and services at participating vendors on and around the school's campus.

According to the Glassboro Police's Facebook page, a 21-year-old Rowan student who worked as a 7-11 employee was crediting his and his friends' Boro Bucks accounts by entering merchandise returns from the store and using them to credit the Boro Bucks accounts of several other students.

The fraudulent charges amounted to about $35,000, the police said. The university had notified police in mid-December about "suspicious financial activity" at the 7-11, triggering a joint investigation.

Kwado Brefo-Boating, of Lindenwold is the 7-11 employee, and has been charged with theft. Five other students- Stephen Cobb, James Mack, LeaQuan James, Malik Bard and Jamal Clark- were charged with theft on warrants and have posted bail. Three more- Karina Felez, Johnel Anderson and Alim Bowden- were charged with theft and issued a summons to appear in court.

Rowan University did not disclose any disciplinary action taken against the students.
