One in custody after assault of Philadelphia officer

Philadelphia Police took a man into custody early Sunday morning after they say he assaulted an officer.

The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning around 61 st Street and Lancaster Avenue.

Officers attempted to stop a silver Infiniti after noticing the car's headlights were not on.

When the officers approached the car, they noticed the driver ducking down into the passenger side of the car, and sitting back up without anything in his hands, like his license and registration.

Police say the officers then asked to see the man's paperwork, and immediately noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the male driver and the inside of the car. The driver's eyes were glassy and bloodshot according to the officers.

The male then put the car in gear, and attempted to drive off, dragging one of the officers who commanded the driver to stop.

The officer eventually fell off the side of the car, skidding about 20 feet on his right side.

Officers caught up with the suspect a short time later, and say the suspect later crashed near the Ridge Avenue off-ramp near Kelly Drive.

An off-duty officer witnessed the crash, and says he saw the man and woman flee the scene of the crash on foot.

The male suspect was taken into custody near the Legacy Youth Tennis courts on Ridge Avenue after a brief foot pursuit.

According to police the officer was not injured.
