Stranded Vehicles, Travelers Safely Removed from PA Turnpike in Somerset, Bedford Counties

- All of the vehicles and travelers have been safely removed from a 16-mile section of the westbound PA Turnpike (Interstate 70/76) between milepost 122 and 138 where some had been stranded since late Friday. The incident began after several tractor trailers jackknifed while ascending the eastern slope of Allegheny Mountain approaching the Allegheny Tunnel at milepost 123 between Bedford (Exit #146) and Somerset (Exit #110).

The eastbound Turnpike has completely reopened to traffic, and the westbound Turnpike remains closed between Bedford (Exit #146) and Somerset (Exit #110). Crews continue to clear packed snow and ice from the westbound lanes, which should reopen in 60 minutes. The PA Turnpike has also lifted the previous ban on all commercial vehicles system wide and has removed the earlier 45 mph speed limit restriction across on the Turnpike and on the Northeastern Extension.

Be alert for changing pavement and weather conditions and follow these safety tips when travelling:
• Drive at a speed suitable for local conditions — even on those sections with a normal posted limit.
• Do not tailgate or attempt to pass an active snow plow or plow train.
• Be prepared for probable slick surfaces, especially on bridges and ramps.
• High crosswinds may cause reduced visibility and snow drifting in some areas.

If travelling, check PA Turnpike conditions at www.paturnpike.com; look at the “Active Travel Advisories” ticker at the top. While traveling, motorists can use the Turnpike’s smartphone app, TRIP Talk, available for Android and iPhone users. The app senses your direction of travel and location and plays audio advisories to alert you of stoppages or delays ahead. Travelers can also call the toll-free TRIP line at 866-976-TRIP (8747) for the latest travel and toll information
