President Obama to honor slain Officer Robert Wilson III Monday

A FOX 29 has confirmed that the family of late Philadelphia Police Officer Robert Wilson III will receive the Medal of Valor from President Obama on Monday.

According to a press release, the ceremony will take place on May 16 in the East Room of the White House.

The Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect others from harm.

On March 5, 2015, Officer Wilson was killed during a robbery attempt while buying a game for his son's birthday.

Shortly after Wilson's murder, then police commissioner Charles Ramsey said the surveillance tape of the deadly ambush showed an act of bravery by Wilson like he'd never seen before.

Prosecutors say Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams fired several shots inside the Game Stop store on the 2100 block of Lehigh Avenue.

Hipps was shot in the leg by Wilson's partner as he tried to get away.

Williams was caught inside the store.
