SoZo Signature Salon Brings High-End Glam on Wheels to You

NEWARK, DE (WTXF) - They're cultural cornerstones in the African American community, the barbershop.

But times are changing and it seems no one has time to spend all day socializing at the salon. One local group is taking that tradition to the next level.

FOX 29's Joyce Evans takes us for a ride in the pimped out salon on wheels.

Creating magic out of tresses is what Delaware stylist Stephen Wilkerson does best.

"It's my passion without a doubt," Wilkerson said.

But after almost 30 years of styling in the chair, on the runway, and on the cover of magazines, this artist is not exactly hanging up his cape, his clippers, blow dryer, or barbershop trash talk. Nope. He's also taking his act on the road! How exactly?

Back inside Castaldi's Salon and Day Spa in Chadds Ford, PA Stephen is whipping hair into shape on his morning clients, so is owner Kevin Castaldi and his son nick too

"With Thanksgiving and the holidays coming up - it's going to get a little busier," Kevin said.

The shop is buzzing about the recent launch of a first in the area. It's a brand new venture for Stephen and new option of services for the Castaldi's.

It's also a bit of a twist on a long-standing culture particularly in African American communities, but this part has changed dramatically.

The concept is not new but the method shows a giant Pamper Palace on Wheels complete with wide screen and fireplace.

Stephen's wife Gina is decorator-in-chief. She's also the brain behind the scene of this nearly $300,000 out-of-pocket venture.

"It's all about mobilization," Gina told FOX 29.

She knows because she works with a huge pharmaceutical company that offers all kinds of mobile services.

First they had to get by Delaware licensing and regulation laws for this kind of thing. Two and a half years later it's finally all aboard.

Debbie just knew she had little time to transform her hair from office to evening.

Michael is considering bringing the bus to a convention site.

The Wilkerson's say they've already landed dozens of girl's night parties and wedding events.

The name Sozo means a type in spiritual healing. Gina says the closest, similar 'salon on wheels' is in Washington, D.C, but it doesn't come even close she says to theirs.
